Course Details
Course Details Operator training classes offered in (Richmond) Virginia are taught at our Richmond Office or at the Chester Campus of John Tyler Community College, located on Jefferson Davis Highway one-half mile south of Highway 10. Take Exit 61B from Interstate 95 and go left at the first traffic light. The College is on the left side, one-half mile south after the Chester Cinema. Click here for an interactive map.

Course Descriptions

BASIC (Class I) Training Course

The Class I course has been approved by the Virginia Board for Waste Management Facility Operators and is required by the Board regulations for certification as a Class I Waste Management Facility Operator. This is a two-day course for operators of Class I facilities, including those which are defined as transfer stations, material recovery facilities receiving mixed waste, experimental facilities, or composting facilities receiving yard waste. The course is designed to acquaint landfill operators with the Virginia Solid Waste Management Regulations and prepare them to take the Board examination for Class I (Basic) certification.


Class II Training Course

The Class II course has been approved by the Virginia Board for Waste Management Facility Operators and is required by the Board regulations for certification as a Class II Waste Management Facility Operator. This is a two-day course for operators of Class II facilities including those which compost municipal solid waste, or sanitary, industrial, construction/demolition/debris (CDD) landfills. This course is designed to acquaint landfill operators with the Virginia Solid Waste Management Regulations and to prepare them to take the Board examination for Class II certification. This course also includes a Class II facility tour.
Course prerequisite: Class I Basic Training Course


8-Hour Continuing Professional Education/Training Course (CPE/T):

The 8-hour CPE/T course has been approved by the Virginia Board for Waste Management Facility Operators and is required every two years by the Board regulations for recertification as a Class I or II Waste Management Facility Operator. This is a one-day, eight-hour classroom course for operators of Class I or II facilities. Class I facilities are defined as transfer stations, material recovery facilities receiving mixed waste, experimental facilities, or composting facilities receiving yard waste; Class II facilities compost municipal solid waste, or are defined as sanitary, industrial, or construction/demolition/debris (CDD) landfills. This is an intermediate-level review of standard and any updated Class I and II training requirements as outlined in the Waste Management Facility Operator Rules and Regulations; this course includes a discussion of any pertinent regulatory changes in the Virginia Solid Waste Management Regulations.
